The Altrusa Seminar Series 2011 has concluded and appears to have been a success as evidenced by evaluations competed after each session.
This year's attendance was higher than prior years; seventy-two people attended both the February and March seminars and eighty-two attended the final event in April.
Our speakers this year were very generous in their willinginess to speak; charging no fees. Thank you Bruce Boguski; "Achieving the Impoosble", Dr. Steven Anderson; "Effective Leadership in a Tough Economy", and Dr. Denis Waitley; "Winning for Life."
Our thanks and gratitude goes to Alvetro Orthodontics for co-sponsoring our Seminar Series this year. Their $500 contribution will help provide added revenue for our scholarship program.
Planning for next year will begin soon - check back for details. Adult Spelling Bee
April 12 started with Joe Laber, emcee, asked Stinger Bees Laurel and Colleen Chalfant to practice popping balloons with their stingers.
Amy Zorn, pronouncer, took charge beginning with a practice round introducing each team member and annoucing who they represent. After the practice round, the game was on.
Rotunda stumped the Cargill Worker Bees, who were awarded dictionaries for being the first to spell out.
Eighteen teams competed in the fourth Annaul Altrusa Adult Spelling Bee. The final two teams, Edison Community College and Bee Zee (Christian Academy) competed for a few rounds until Bee Zee incorrectly spelled "stanchion" which Edison spelled correctly and then for the win "ballyhooed."
The Bee was a huge success raising $4750 from team sponsors and donations. Edison Community College is eager to host the 2012 Bee. Watch for details
The registration fee of $250 per team will be used to promote education! How is the bee promoting education? All of the funds will be awarded at the end of the school year as Scholarships to Shelby County residents. In 2008 and 2009 five $1,000 scholarships and in 2010 ten $1,000 scholarships were awarded.

All proceeds go towards the operating budget. This is the only fundraiser for which the profits are used for operating the local club. Make A Difference Day
In 2008 over $300 was donated to Central and Longfellow Schools who benefited from “Make A Difference Day”. The money was used to pay for supplies or fees as needed for the students and classrooms.
